Hello Ndedi, Can you please tell us more about the person behind the art?

Ndedi Asek:

Hello GC. Ndedi:

Asek an Afro-contemporary visual artist. The scope of my knowledge of art revolves not only around painting, but also encompasses digital arts, graphic design, illustration, 2D animation and various forms of traditional art-making. I’m also into creative writing and craftsmanship. Ndedi Asek is a humble, passionate, objective, mysterious type of person…Who is always willing to learn and appreciate new aspects of life. I’m of both Cameroonian and Nigerian heritage, an aspect that has immensely boosted and widened my creative process and knowledge.

G-classConnect:

Did you study arts in school or is painting just a natural thing?

Ndedi Ask:

I never studied arts in school. It is a gift from God, I must say. The Creative process of art-making has always been a part of me, right from the tender age. As a kid, I was opportune to learn a rich diversity of cultural experiences. This developed in me a deep sense of love for land and strong bond and connectedness between people of different cultures and languages. I still have memories of how my drawings in primary school used to put the teachers and students in a state of awe. So, with regards to art, it came naturally. Although I continue to learn from fellow artists and collaborators on means to fine-tune and polish my skills.

G-classConnect:

Your art slogan is “Art that speaks to the soul.” Please tell us more about how your arts speak to the soul?

Ndedi Asek:

That’s the ultimate purpose of aesthetic. I try to create art that voice out the essence of human beauty and strength of the spirit…Art that appeals to our conscience and spiritual values. In that light, I use different perspectives of humanity and create art that illuminates the untainted values of our immortal strength…The Soul.

G-classConnect:

What is the driving force behind your arts?  What inspires you?

Ndedi Asek:

The driving force behind my arts comes from an intuitive, spiritual and symbolic concept or thought process. I am inspired by nature, ceremonial rituals, people in relation to their culture and environment, social trends and events, history and religion.

G-classConnect:

Is painting a means of livelihood or it just happened that you are deriving revenue from it?

Ndedi Asek:

Art-making, as a whole, has provided an alternate source of income to me, I must admit. I began creating art for leisure but presently, the revenue I derive from it has
been impressive. But I believe in time and through the Grace of God, painting will make me “hammer”. Lol.

G-classConnect:

How do you reflect different lifestyles and cultures in your arts?

Ndedi Asek:

While art is an individual means of expression, it is a source of beauty, communication, reflection, pride and immortality for diverse cultures and lifestyles. Pertaining to this, I carry
out a lot of research on the interest, opinions, behavioural orientations of an individual or group of people, and their culture. Through this process, I get
to understand the core values, peculiarities and riches of these cultures and lifestyle. These are the aspects I, eventually, represent on canvas.

G-classConnect:

Aside painting, what else do you do for a living?

Ndedi Asek:

Apart from painting, I work in public service. I’m also a graphic designer, illustrator, creative director and web developer.

G-classConnect:

Where else do you sell your arts besides Cameroon?

Ndedi Asek:

Apart from Cameroon, my art is being sold in countries like USA, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria and the Netherlands. These are countries where the demand for my art has steadily increased over the years.

G-classConnect:

Who is your most admired painter?

Ndedi Asek:
